Delicious is a popular social bookmarking site founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003. Being one of the first social bookmarking sites Yahoo Inc. acquired Delicious in 2005. Five years down the line and according to a latest tweet by Eric Marcoullier founder of MyBlogLog and a former Yahoo employee, Yahoo is going to pull the plug on delicious. The leak comes a day after Yahoo announced slashing over 600 of its employees which makes about four percent of its workforce. Eric tweeted the leak along with a screenshot of a presentation slide which now returns 404, clearly Yahoo is not happy about the latest leak.

Along with Delicious services such as Altavista, MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Bookmarks and Yahoo! Picks are going to be shut down as well.

Yahoo’s official response:

Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond.

We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.

Delicious was neglected by Yahoo ever since they acquired it which led to alot of spam making its way to what I believe was a brilliant social bookmarking platform.
