The Google Network is a large group of websites and other products, such as email programmes and blogs that have partnered with Google to display Google’s pay per click advertising. When setting up your Google Adwords account you have the option to display your adverts on the content network at no extra cost.
On the content network an ad is targeted based on content theme for websites or other products where they appear. These could be triggered by keywords used in contextual targeting or by selecting specific placements.
If you use placement targeting only this will determine where your ad can appear. Placement targeting affects the content network but not Google search or search partner sites. Using placement targeting and keywords together is by far the best strategy as the two work together to determine where your ad will appear.
For a keyword campaign ads would be shown across the search network based on specific search items while ads on a content site would be targeting the content.
