I have been studying Google+ Local business pages lately and have come across something that is kind of hidden in the Google+ Local business pages. Normally, Google+ Local pages only show two categories for each business however if you click on a category then you will get a list of all the categories that are associated with a given business.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the business is tagged in 9 categories. The interesting thing is that in the Google Places dashboard there are only 5 text fields for categories (see below). Question is, how is Google getting the extra 4 categories from? I know some folks use the custom categories by stuffing comma separated keywords but would Google parse those as individual categories in their own right? Or is it getting those “extra” categories from MapMaker?
