So here we are, beginning at the beginning (as one should) with how to set up your Adwords account. If you’re not opting to use a pay per click management agency to set it up, it can be nerve wracking making sure you’re doing everything correctly so this should give you a hand…
Step 1 . Visit Adwords.Google.co.uk (depending on where in the world you are)
Step 2. Click the ‘Start now’ button that appears.
Step 3. You will now reach this page:
This page requires you to enter the email address and password you wish to use to access your account. Now, this page gives you the option of using an existing email address and password that you currently use for other Google services. There is nothing against using an existing email address but in my experience managing Adwords accounts, if you wish to work with a PPC management company in the future you will not wish to provide them with your logins if they also access your emails etc. For this reason, it may be best to create a dedicated email address. This email address does not have to be a Gmail address, despite the fact that Adwords is a Google service.
The email address you enter must be able to receive emails as you will need to click a link in an email to verify your account. For this reason, don’t use an account you no longer have access to/have lost the password to/have dedicated to receiving spam. This email address will also be where Google send billing notifications and alert you of any issues in your account so keep an eye out!
So once you’ve entered these details and completed the captcha test, click ‘Create Account’.
Step 4. You will now reach a page which allows you to set the time zone and currency of your account. Once you have entered a time zone and currency these CANNOT be changed so pay attention. (Ok, so not strictly true – You can ring Google at any time after an account setup and they will change the currency/time zone for you but you might as well avoid this by getting it right at this stage.)
Check, double check and triple check your selections on this page and when you are sure you are happy (with your selections, not just in general) then click ‘Continue’.
Step 5. Congratulations! You have created your Google Adwords account!
Now simply open the email Adwords will send you (those of you who are very spam weary, the email comes from firstname.lastname@example.org) and click on the link provided. This will open a new tab on your browser which leads you back into your verified account. Ta-Daaa!
Now I know there is a big enticing button saying ‘Create Your First Campaign’ BUT don’t just leap in. My next blog (coming later this week) details how best to structure an account – this is essential in the success of your Adwords account so be patient or read up on Google’s best practices before jumping in!
